Arnt Rian’s small jumbo

Here are some shots of my latest small jumbo, let me hear what you think!

Alaska sitka top
East Indian Rosewood back and sides
Mahogany neck
Curly koa binding
Ebony fingerboard and headstock overlay
Brazilian rosewood bridge
"Tor-tois" pick guard

Some numbers:
645 mm scale
405 mm lower bout
295 mm upper bout
500 mm body length
45 mm nut

The finish is nitro over epoxy pore fill. The neck is stained with colortone dark brown aniline dye, which brings it pretty close to the rosewood hue.

It sounds pretty good if I must say so myself! This is the third one I made with this shape (my 10th guitar total), and I'm keeping this one for myself.

The bracing is pretty standard I guess, "forward shifted" and scalloped X-braces, African blackwood bridgeplate. The specks you see on the plate is where I write down the plate thickness on that spot. I graduate the plate thickness towards the lower bout's edges, and I write down the numbers for the record.

You guys are so fast you slipped in between my first two messages!

Tracy, this guitar is for me, I'm keeping it as a reference both for me and potential new customers. The sound is getting there, it's still only about 3 weeks since I put strings on her. The overtones are still developing I think. I just put mediums on, and it was a definite inprovement over lights.

Beautiful work, Arnt! Good luck in being able to keep that guitar for yourself. As many on this forum can tell you, "personal" instruments usually become "sold" in a short time. Somebody is going to want that one!

Arnt, that's really nice. This is a great example of why epoxy is so much better than the colored pore fillers out there --- you can really see the beauty of the wood. And all of the jointery is extremely clean!

How would you compare the sound of your small jumbos to the other body designs you have built?

My other designs include a parlor, another SJ, but more like a Gibson 185(?) and one resembling an OM. They are all very different animals! That's why I'm concentrating on this design now and just changing a few things each time, trying to figure out what effects what. I'm not very methodic about it, but I do record as much as possible too see if I can detect trends. What I like about this model is the blend of a pretty good bass, but not so loud that it drowns out the rest, and a clear midrange. The highs are easiest, they just ARE there (as with most steel string guitars in my experience). To my ear, this design has a very good overall balance.

Thanks again guys. The headstock shape is heavily inspired by Martin, so I don't feel I can take too much credit for it. The inlays and binding are just my take on an old classic, and the script on the logo is my own handwriting, cut out of pearl. Anyways, glad you all seem to like it!
